Dr. Noam Chomsky

Dr. Noam Chomsky

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, political scientist, intellectual and activist of Jewish origin, born on December 7, 1928 in Philadelphia. His work has spanned a broad spectrum of disciplines, from linguistics to social and political criticism.

Noam Chomsky has revolutionized our understanding of language in profound and lasting ways. His main contribution lies in the theory of universal grammar. This theory proposes that all human beings are born with an innate ability to acquire language, that is, we have a kind of "universal grammar" pre-installed in our brain.

Chomsky suggests that all languages share a common deep structure, despite their surface differences. This deep structure is what allows us to generate an infinite number of sentences from a finite set of rules.

The capacity for language is not something that we learn completely through experience, but rather it is an innate faculty that develops in interaction with the linguistic environment.

Children acquire language from a limited amount of linguistic input, suggesting that they must have some prior knowledge about language structure.

Chomsky's theory displaced behaviorist theories of language, which viewed language as behavior learned through imitation and reinforcement. Universal grammar has stimulated a great deal of research in linguistics, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience. Chomsky's ideas have had applications in fields such as education, speech therapy, and the development of human-computer interfaces.

Chomsky has taught us that language is much more than a simple communication system. It is a complex and highly structured cognitive faculty, which is deeply rooted in our human nature. His work has opened new avenues for understanding how we think, learn and communicate.

Within the framework of the awarding of the honorary doctorate to Dr. Noam Chomsky by the UAEM University Council, Dr. Juan C. González conducted an interview with Dr. Chomsky, which he presented on Friday, September 11 to the CINCCO community.
